Design and Technology at Beacon View Primary Academy
At Beacon View Primary Academy, children are empowered to become creative designers and innovative engineers. Through engaging, practical experiences, pupils are provided with a wide range of tools, materials and opportunities that enable them to bring their ideas to life.
Children design, make and evaluate products across the full range of Design and Technology disciplines, including food technology, textiles, structures, mechanical systems and electrical systems. They learn to apply knowledge and skills from other curriculum areas, particularly mathematics and science, to solve real-life problems and create purposeful products.
We encourage all children to develop the confidence to try new ideas, take risks and learn from mistakes. They understand that errors are not failures but an essential part of the design process, helping them to refine and improve their work. This approach strengthens one of our core school values: resilience.
Through Design and Technology, children learn that they have the power to make positive changes to their own lives and the lives of others. They develop an understanding of sustainability through the principles of the 5Rs:
- Reduce
- Reuse
- Recycle
- Refus
- Repurpose
Children learn how thoughtful design decisions and healthy food choices can contribute to a more sustainable future and improve wellbeing.
By the end of their journey at Beacon View Primary Academy, children will have developed the creativity, practical skills, resilience and confidence needed to become responsible problem-solvers and active contributors to the world around them. They leave with an understanding that good design can improve people's lives, protect the environment and help shape a better future for everyone.
