Year 3 and 4 Topic Summer Term 2017

I Love Where I Live

years 3 and 4 are going to be doing a topic called 'I Love Where I Live'. This is based on the book stig of the dump. In this book, a boy meets a creature called stig who lives in the bottom of a chalk/rubbish tip. The Children will start by looking at science based materials and rocks. They will be visiting the chalk pit and then focus onto an area where they live and different landmarks in Portsmouth. They will be designing their own tour of Portsmouth and using the minibus to explore different areas.

Break times

If children wish to they can bring a snack with them for their break time.  Please note that this snack must be healthy (ideally a piece of fruit).

PE

Doyle         -     Tuesday/Wednesday

Kipling       -     Wednesday/Friday

Dickens     -     Wednesday/Friday

PE kits should now be in school and will be sent home at half term to be washed.  If any items no longer fit these are to be returned to school and you will need to purchase new ones.  Any lost PE kit will also need to be replaced.

Music

Music lessons will once again be provided by Portsmouth Music Service.  Children will be learning how to use a range of different percussion instruments this term.  Music lessons are on Wednesday mornings.

Home Learning

We will be sending out our home learning project in the next few weeks which needs to be completed after half term.

How can you help your child?

  • Please ensure that all children are bringing their reading record into school and are reading at home for a minimum of three times a week either with an adult or independently.
  • If your child reads independently they are allowed to complete their reading record themselves as long as an adult from home signs the book to confirm this.
  • Children will also receive weekly spellings and times tables that they need to practise at home.  These will be tested each week by the class teacher.
  • This year we will be having a massive focus on writing.  Please ensure that wherever possible children are given the opportunity to write at home.  This could be in the form of a diary, shopping list or facts they have found on the internet.
  • Please inform us straight away if there is anything you think we need to know.
  • If you have any problems or worries speak to your child's class teacher or Mrs Pountain, the Phase Leader for years 3 and 4, we will try our best to sort these for you.
